Delivering the Dream with AVID
AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) guest speaker Jonathan Brown inspired Midlothian middle school and high school teachers as he told his personal story of how the AVID program changed his life.
Since 2008, Midlothian High School has had 90 students in the AVID program and is expecting 45 more students this school year. Ramsi Russell, MHS AVID Coordinator, and trained teachers and counselors are ready to help AVID students by providing academic training, managing tutorials, working with faculty and parents, and helping students develop long-range academic and personal plans.
AVID is a college-readiness system designed to increase the number of students who enroll in four-year colleges. Although AVID serves all students, it focuses on the least-served students in the academic middle (B, C, and D students). These are students who are capable of completing rigorous curriculum but are falling short of their potential. AVID pulls these students out of their unchallenging courses and puts them on college track: acceleration instead of remediation.
The AVID formula is simple - raise expectations of students and, with the AVID support system in place, they will rise to the challenge. |
