Mrs. Williams' 4th graders at LaRue Miller Elementary are having a wonderful time learning about the free enterprise system. Our producers are busy earning money in order to buy business licenses and supplies. Our consumers are hard at work to earn money in order to participate in the 4th grade free market society.
The new theme this year in Mrs. Lassetter's math class at LaRue Miller Elementary is "Math Beyond These Classroom Walls." Students are getting first hand experience of how math is used in different occupations from various guests. Mr. Chambers, retired General from the Air Force, presented how math is used in the military. The students had to use math to find a solution on getting enough supplies to Afghanistan to build 15 base camps. The students will also be experiencing math in structural steel, nursing, and financial advising. Thank you Mr. Chambers for making this a valuable learning experience for all of us!
Students in Mrs. Nanney's class at LaRue Miller Elementary had a visit from Logan L.'s barnyard. They have been studying oviparous animals.

As a service learning project, Mrs. Cooper's class made blankets that we donated to children who come out of surgery at Cook Children's hospital in Dallas. Each student had a hand in making these blankets as we worked together to tie the knots that keeps the fabric in tact. It has warmed our hearts to know that children just like us will be touched with these blankets.
Miller's Kindness and Compassion Club passed out baggies of goldfish to the teachers and staff to show them their appreciation for all their hard work. The bags said, "Of All the FISH in the SEA... We're glad we swim in the same SCHOOL!"
IMAGINE students at Miller Elementary stepped back into time to research and reveal popular fads from the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s!
Dr. Suess was loose in the land of Kinder at Miller Elementary! Learners in Mrs. Story's class dressed for Suess success and shared stories and ideas for a thrilling day of reading.
1st grade students in Miss Daniell's class, at LaRue Miller Elementary, went "digging" during their Rock Unit. Once they found their perfect rocks they discussed the shape, size, color and texture of their rocks! After researching and observing them, Miss Daniell's class decided to turn them into pets. They washed and painted their pet and wrote a story about how their rock came to look the way it did! Who knew rocks could be so fun and interesting?
Third graders, Jack and Jordan, in Mrs. Clark's class recently reviewed symmetry by writing their names in cursive in black, tracing over it, and then pressing down on the folded sheet of paper. The faint outline of their names on the back then allowed them the chance to retrace their work and color the symmetrical "bugs." Commented one student: "TOADally cool!"
Geologists in Mrs. Stanley's first grade class at LaRue Miller Elementary went on a rock hunt to practice describing the properties of rocks, sand, and soil.
Fifth graders in Mrs. Campbell's class at LaRue Miller Elementary participated in a readers' theater while learning about Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad.
Learners in Mrs. Johnson's Head Start classroom at LaRue Miller Elementary used various art supplies to create special valentines for each other and their families. Giovani (right) is writing his alphabet in hearts.
LaRue Miller Elementary's Kindness and Compassion Club spreads the love for Valentine's Day by making encouraging posters to hang up around the school. The entire campus re-committed themselves this past week to living the principles of Rachel's Challenge during their recent Heart Rock Cafe Assembly. Thanks, KC Club, for sharing your love with all of us!
Dr. Shelly Clark's office came to visit Head Start classes today at LaRue Miller Elementary and brought Allie the Alligator with them to talk about dental health. Allie taught the children about foods that are good for the teeth, how many times a day to brush and floss teeth, and how many times a year to visit the dentist.
Mrs. Hoover's third graders at La Rue Miller Elementary made their favorite landform out of play dough. This was a fun ending activity to our study on landforms.
The LaRue Miller Elementary STU-CO team packed baggies of popcorn for the winning classes of the annual first semester food drive. The team had a blast packing the popcorn treats for the "Scooby-Doo and Popcorn Too" parties because they wore special food service gloves in the process. Kindergarten students at LaRue Miller worked with their older study buddies to research information about community helpers. They paraded their work to other classrooms to share the results.
Students at LaRue Miller Elementary recently joined their principal, Mrs. Van, for a special luncheon in their honor. Learners in Kindergarten - 5th grades who achieved this special recognition had to earn top grades, have no tardies or absences, and have steller conduct each day the first semester of this school year. Congratulations to 39 learners who achieved this high honor!
Mr. Tom Moore, MISD Board of Trustee, recently spent the afternoon at LaRue Miller Elementary visiting classrooms, students, teachers, and personally touring the facility with the Student Honor Council. We truly appreciate the time, gifts, and service all our MISD Board members give to our learning community; you help all our district SHINE!

Using alphabet cookie cutters, Mrs. Mitchell's students found the first initials in their names and then cut them out of cheese. They placed the cheese on bread, broiled it in the oven and called it ABC Cheese Toast. It was even more fun to see who the toast belonged to after it was cooked, because they had to read and know each other's initial letter!
Texas Rangers, Nelson Cruz (Peyton) and Josh Hamilton (Ryan) visited their classroom for Character Day during Red Ribbon Week at Miller. We sure love our Texas Rangers!

LaRue Miller Elementary Student Honor Council helped collect cans for our one day canned food drive. Our Red Ribbon theme was: "Being Drug Free Comes in Cans: I CAN; YOU CAN; WE CAN Be Drug Free!" StuCo members Jace, Michael, Emily, Bryce and Baylee are helping load up one of the carts. Miller learners collected 830 cans by the end of the day! Our cans will go to help the Manna House Food Pantry in Midlothian. We still plan on having our "big" food drive early in November. We are so proud of our students' generosity!
First Graders in Mrs. Boehringer's class are wearing their favorite jerseys to make sure everyone knows to "be a good sport and don't do drugs!".

Where in the World is Australia? Mrs. Cooper's 2nd Grade IMAGINE students, Presley, Avalon and Bryce, chose a continent to research. During class they conducted their research through literature. They then made a poster to convey their information to their audience. Last, they informed the class of the facts and details that they gathered. The best part was getting to go teach Mrs. Van what they learned.

Take me out to the ball game, take me out to the crowd! Mrs. Cooper's class had a friendly visit from our weekly mystery reader. Bryce's dad came to read us a great story called Teammates by Peter Golenbock. Teammates tells the story of one of the more moving moments in the history of baseball that occurred during the 1947 season when the Brooklyn Dodgers traveled to Crosley Field in Cincinnati to play the Reds. Jackie Robinson, the first black man to play in the major leagues, was playing first base and being the target of hostility and abuse from the fans. At shortstop was Harold "Pee Wee" Reese, who born in the South, but who had refused to join other Southerners on the team in signing a petition to kick Jackie off the team. That day in Cincinnati, Reese did something that remains one of the bright moments of that historic season and which deserves to be more than a minor footnote in baseball history.
Today Mrs. Cooper's class played Double it up! This is a fun educational, hands-on game with a single die, 2 crayons, and a Double it up! board. Students took turns rolling the die, doubling the number and coloring in the sum of the doubles addition fact. What a fun way to help us remember our doubles by Double it up!
Miller Head Start student, Alex, uses his fine motor skills to squeeze the tongs and pick up a pom pom to put in a bottle. Working these muscles is important to help prepare young children for writing.
Mrs. Cooper's 2nd Grade Class are "instrumental" to Miller success. To conclude their lesson on sound and invisible sound waves, they created and paraded homemade instruments. Each learner shared an instrument made from recycled materials - what a valuable lesson in recycling as well. BRAVOS to these creative, "sound'sational instrumentalists!
After learning about latitude and longitude, the fifth graders in Mrs. Campbell's social studies classes at Miller Elementary navigated through a Scavenger Hunt with GPS units. They compared their experience to that of early English explorers in America.

After the AllStar Pep Rally, Avery and Cooper sit with Austin inside one of the many fundraiser prizes that can be won from participating in the upcoming AllStar Fun Run at Miller Elementary. The Fun Run is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 22; we hope to see you at Miller!

As part of "College: Go Get It!" Week in MISD, Miller learners, Avery and Riley, joined Mrs. Van in dressing in academic regalia as a ticket to future dreams. Staff members shared their college experiences, study habits, and other interesting facts to encourage learners to think about their future plans. Higher education is a definitely a "ticket to dreams," and as Avery noted, "I'm a super college girl saving the world one degree at a time!"
Head Start students, Kylie T. and Bryson H., learn about toothbrushing skills while practicing on jumbo teeth. Brushing teeth is part of our daily routine in Head Start.
Students from Mrs. Boehringer's class are learning about place value by counting out 5 groups of 10. They were helping celebrate one of LaRue Miller's first grade teacher's birthday during math time. Afterwards they delivered a sweet bouquet of Tootsie Roll pops to Mrs. King!
